ISA

The Intervention for Social Anxiety (ISA) project is for children and young people between the ages of 8 and 16 with social anxiety disorder and for their parents. Social anxiety is characterized by excessive fear and avoidance of social situations, in which children are mainly afraid of being negatively judged by others.

About the program

The intervention for social anxiety, or ISA, is an intervention in which child and parent(s) both, separately from each other, follow a program to help the child with their social anxiety. Your child will participate in the cognitive behavioral therapy 'Thinking + Doing is Daring' (DDD) for 12 weeks in which he/she will learn new behavior to overcome the fear. Parents will participate in the 'Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions' (SPACE) intervention for 12 weeks, where we will look together at what parents can do to best support their anxious child. With ISA, you tackle the child's social anxiety together.

For whom?

Children aged 8 to 16 years with social anxiety and of whom at least one of the parents wants to participate in the treatment program. It is important that the child is not currently being treated for anxiety problems.

You do this as part of research, what does that mean?

When you participate in this treatment process, you will also participate in research. This means that an interview and questionnaires will be conducted with parent(s) and child before, during and after the treatment process. In addition, we ask parent(s) and child to answer a few short questions on their own phone every day (max. 1 min per day). Thanks to your answers, we can measure the effectiveness of offering both programs simultaneously.

Where is the intervention given and what does it cost?

The Knowledge Centre Anxiety and Stress is not a treatment institution, but works together with the Leiden University Treatment and Expertise Centre in Leiden (LUBEC), where the intervention will take place. Because youth care is organized through the municipality, it is only possible receive care within your own municipality.
